There
are several ways to get yourself a team of dogs to run the Iditarod. A
person can lease or buy a team that is "ready to go". Another musher has
trained the team and often trains the rookie musher as well. This is a
nice option for someone who wants to run the Iditarod without the long-term
financial and time commitment. A person can also buy dogs from one or
several mushers, train them themselves and take them to Iditarod. Finally,
a person can buy a few dogs, have puppies and train these dogs to eventually run
the big race.
We have been lucky enough to buy adult dogs, many with long-distance race experience, from a variety of successful mushers in Alaska. We have had most of the dogs for 2-3 seasons, long enough for them to work with each other and Todd as a true team. These are the dogs Todd has raced with the last two years; he will be running them in Iditarod. In our kennel we also have 5 yearlings and 11 puppies. We plan to have more puppies again this year. These young dogs will become the core of our team over the next several years.
